laravel distinct not working

$messages = collect(Message::where('recipient_id', $user)->get());

    $messagesUnique = $messages->unique('recipient_id');

    $messagesUnique->values()->all();

distinct laravel not working

$outgoings = Invoice::where('customerID', $id)
                    ->groupBy('invoiceNumber')
                    ->get();
This will work but....

Have to follow this to false strict
